The carousel that is now called Nunley’s Carousel was created in 1912. The carousel was installed in Brooklyn, in Canarsie’s Golden City Park; where it was known as Murphy’s Carousel and operated for 26 years.
Murphy’s carousel and large framed carousel building were then moved to a Baldwin, Long Island site in 1940, where is reopened as Nunley’s Carousel and operated as an amusement park until its closure in 1995. The amusement rides, games and miniature golf course were all sold. The carousel, standing alone, was in danger of being auctioned off in pieces.
The County of Nassau, recognizing the significance of the carousel and what it means to Long Island residents, purchased it as a historic artifact. The carousel was moved to another location, Museum Row in Garden City, Long Island. E&A worked closely with the County of Nassau and its in-house design team to assist and construct the carousel and new enclosure.
